Music you should be listening to…May 5th Edition

Posted by Will in blog, Chatter, Music you Should be Listening to

In case you missed it here’s last weeks edition ( the very first I should mention!) of Music you Should be Listening to.  For this week this is what we’ve got:

Black Swan-Athlete

Athlete - Black Swan

The newest release from the band Athlete (It’s taken a while to make it to the States) is sure to not disappoint.  In my opinion Athlete is a perfect blend of great lyrics, Rock elements and Electronic elements, all while making them sound like they go together.  Most “Electronic” elements in CD’s today are post-production and you can tell. An Artists writes a song and then a producer “sweetens” it with loops, pads, etc.  When I find a CD that doesn’t do this but blends it into the Creative process and makes it part of the band I greately celebrate them.  The music is great on the CD and a few of the songs are just so dang catchy you’ll be humming them all day.

(As a bonus while we are here you should pick up all their other albums.  Yeah I like them THAT much!)

Vehicles and Animals Athlete - Vehicles & Animals

Tourist Athlete - Tourist

Beyond the Neighbourhood Athlete - Beyond the Neighbourhood

The Rising Tied -Fort Minor

Fort Minor featuring Styles of Beyond - The Rising Tied - Remember the Name

This album is a few years old now 2005 to be exact, but the programming on it is classic.  Its a Hip-Hop album from Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda.  As a heads up there is an explicit version of this album, so this may not be an album you want to crank up before youth group, or you may get some calls from Parents!  If your looking at music to improve your Drum Loop Programming Skills this is a great CD to try and replicate and “lift” beats from.  The beats are Hip-Hop based but  sound and feel Organic enough to keep your interest.

Life Light Up- Christy Nockels

Christy Nockels - Life Light Up

Yep I’m man enough to admit I’ve always been a Watermark fan.  If your like me then you probably already have this CD and agree.  Nathan did a great job on this CD to make it sound “fresh” enough without sounding exactly like everything else and without “reinventing the wheel”.  This is no Game Changing album but with tracks like “A Mighty Fortress” and “By our Love” its an album every worship leader should take note of.  There are plenty of cuts on here that you’ll be able to use with your congregation.

Interpreting the Masters Vol. 1 -The Bird and the Bee

The Bird and the Bee - Interpreting the Masters, Vol. 1 (A Tribute to Daryl Hall and John Oates)

In my opinon I’ve saved the best for last this week. Holy Cow…is this CD catchy.  This CD is full of Hall and Oates tracks that we’ve all heard a million times before.  If your like me you’ll listen to it and go… I didn’t realize this was a Hall and Oates track.  But every song on the CD is one you’ll want to crank in your car and sing at the top of your lungs.  They do a great job of re-doing every song and adding their own touch to each track while still maintaining the energy and vibe of the originals.  If you like “Electronic” music or upbeat music or you have a Soul… You’ll enjoy this CD!

Just bought the latest from Robbie Seay Band. “Miracle”. Great album all the way through. These dudes continue to impress me with every release. Stellar musicianship, new things, and great lyrics.

I totally agree with your write-up on Fort Minor. I have been a very huge fan of Linkin Park and Mike Shinoda’s side project, Fort Minor, for several years now. And the main part about them that I love the most is the programming in their music. I love the attention to detail they put into their projects, and the special “ear candy” they drop into most of their songs. The same with the band Demon Hunter. Love them. Their drummer, Yogi Watts, is an absolute beast on the kit. And what sets him apart from any other drummer/band in that genre is that he plays to complement the songs, never over-plays to draw attention to how awesome he actually is. He plays “with” the music – not “to” it.
Another band that I love from a programming standpoint is Falling Up. Take a moment and listen to a few of their tracks, everything flows together perfectly (in my own opinion), and the dynamics are spot-on, not too much, not too little…
I picked up music production as a hobby a few years back, and draw a lot of inspiration for my work from bands/groups like these.

Will, it sounds like you and I have much in common. Worship, guitarist by experience but fascinated in electronics. That so, there are a few projects I would recommend as well.

    1) Insides by Jon Hopkins
Jon is a minimalist DJ/Producer from the U.K. I saw him open for ColdPlay a few summers ago, and, wow. This whole record is great. It is primarily downbeat, eclectic, blends organic instruments (pianos, cellos) with synthetic beats and noises… mood setting kind of stuff. I’ve previewed other work from Jon, but this is by far the coolest.

    2) Drink the Sea by The Glitch Mob
This record is only a month old or so. The GM is made up of three guys who set up on a table top with laptops, drum machines, midi controllers and peripheral hardware for warping sounds. Most of the tempos are in the groove range, like in the 90 – 110 bmp range. There approach is simple which makes it listenable. They program some of the sounds and beats, but you can tell they perform a fair amount of it live because it isn’t perfectly quantized. It’s got a human feel, and a great vibe.

Check ‘em when you get a chance.

Might I add ‘All the Bright Lights’ as well?!

They are on tour right now with John Mark McMillan and it mostly instrumental worship music but could certainly be added to the playlist… Enjoy friends!
