Music you Should be Listening to…July 6 Edition!

How I got Over-The Roots

iTunes Link

It’s been a few weeks since we’ve offered up our advice in the new music department. This CD is one we just couldn’t pass up. It’s the new release from the band “The Roots”. They’ve become more and more well known in recent days thanks in part to their role as the house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

The CD definitely has some spiritual overtones to it especially the track Dear God 2.0 which samples a “Monsters of Folk” itunes link song which in itself samples the song “Is there any Love” by Trevor Dandy itunes link. It’s a great tune that talks about struggling to maintain faith and trust in God when the world seems so messed up. My favorite line in the tune is “why is the world so ugly, when you made it in your image”.

The rest of the album has it’s moments of profanity but throughout the album there is an exploration of faith and a desire to pursue God. The music is solid throughout. The grooves on a few of these songs are out of this world and the hooks and melodies are catchy.

If you want a good CD that will provide you with some musical enjoyment and some good lyrics to ponder over then the Root’s “How I got over” is a great choice.
